Entrusting children with the Great Commission

Entrusting children with the Great Commission

Some people seem to just overflow with joy. They have contagious smiles, generous spirits, and hospitable homes. Assumpta is one of those people. She can light up a room with her laughter, cook an incredible meal for a multitude of people, and make you wonder just what has given her so much passion. As our Weave team sat in Assumpta’s home in the rolling hills of Rwanda, they began to see the source of her overflowing passion. The CMM’s family mobilization team, Weave, had just finished teaching a Big Story Training in Kigali. This training, created to help families find their most strategic role in the Great Commission, was close to Assumpta’s heart. She not only administered the whole two-day event, but also went out of her way to make the CMM Weave team feel at home throughout their visit. As the team finished dinner in her home and Assumpta began to serve tea, she explained what God had done in her life to give her such passion for family mobilization. God had burdened her heart for the unreached peoples of the world, and years ago, He led her to a discipleship program in a nearby country. At the end of the discipleship program, the students were encouraged to ask God for a specific vision He might have for their ministries. Many students shared grand visions of moving to unreached people groups to share the gospel and starting businesses that would support global workers. But both Assumpta and her roommate separately felt God calling them to family mobilization. They wanted to help the church see how God could use...
Family mobilization training is launched in China despite tight security

Family mobilization training is launched in China despite tight security

Nearly 40 parents and pastors gathered together in a back room, on the top floor of a factory office building. Everyone removed SIM cards from and gave up their cell phones for the duration of the training. They were sleeping on mats on the floor throughout the building; there was no heat and the temperatures were near freezing. Only a small handful of participants ventured outside the gates of the factory compound. All of this was done in order to avoid raising suspicion and alerting the Chinese authorities to the fact that there was a large group of people meeting in this place. This was the first BIG Story Training to take place in China. Developed by Weave, a ministry of the CMM, the BIG Story Training (BST) is all about God’s plan to redeem a people from every tribe, tongue, and nation—and specifically about the role He invites families and children to play in His big story. Through this training, we want to help parents see that God has a plan for their whole family to be involved in spreading the gospel to the ends of the earth, and to give them tangible ways to do just that. In more than 10 years of doing ministry in China, I have never experienced an event with security as tight as it was for this training. It amazes me to see what local believers are willing to do and sacrifice so they can grow in understanding the Lord’s purposes. “I know that we are all nervous,” one of our hosts said before the training began. “But nothing happens without God’s...
Ethiopian families embrace God’s mission

Ethiopian families embrace God’s mission

There is no bigger advocate for discipling families in Africa to embrace the Great Commission than Tariku, CMM global affiliate from Ethiopia. As the executive director of Horn of Africa Evangelical Mission Engagers, Tariku knows that to have a sustainable mission movement to the unreached, we must reach families. To empower and train families in living out the Great Commission, our family mobilization ministry, Weave, launched The BIG Story Training in Ethiopia three years ago. Since then, it has been embraced and championed by key mobilization partners like Tariku. Of the eight BIG Story Trainings held in Ethiopia since 2014, six of them have been led by Ethiopian trainers. Earlier this year, Tariku reported that the Amharic translation of the training was complete and had been distributed to 15 trainers from two key regions of the country. Tariku sees The BIG Story Training as a core piece of his organization’s mobilization strategy. He shared with us, “In light of Africa being the youngest continent, and because of the strategic place family and children have in building missional culture, our organization is taking The BIG Story Training as our top mobilization tool of igniting mission movements for the decades ahead.” God has used this mobilization tool to cast vision across the nation of Ethiopia for the role families can play in the Great Commission. Tariku and the Weave team celebrate Ethiopian families like Shemel’s. After attending a BIG Story Training, Shemel and his family began embracing the habits of a World Christian family. The father of two daughters, Shemel and his family continue to pray daily for the unreached, as...
Nigerian Children–a Formidable Mission Force

Nigerian Children–a Formidable Mission Force

42% of Nigeria’s population is younger than 14 years old. Imagine what could be done if these children were empowered to see themselves as part of God’s global story! In July, Carissa and Karen, two of our Weave staff members, conducted a series of Big Story trainings in two regions of Nigeria. They trained 162 parents, teachers, and pastors on the importance of family mobilization. They also equipped 37 local participants to carry on the work of mobilizing families after Carissa and Karen had left. These trainees are now equipped to make world Christians out of their many children, discipling them to go, send, welcome, mobilize, and pray for unreached peoples. They are now equipped to multiply the Big Story Training throughout the region. “Children are not only a mission field,” said one participant. “They can be transformed into a formidable mission force when they are taught to embrace a biblical worldview. Their role in accomplishing God’s mission should not be underrated. They, like adults, should be involved in the task of taking the gospel to the...
