It Only Takes a Spark

It Only Takes a Spark

A young mother’s heart is ignited for the unreached after a simple invitation It was Weave’s very first BIG Story Training in East Asia. We were escorted into a private building, where participants would stay for four days. If anyone left, it could put the entire group in danger. Despite the circumstances, the room of participants was not full of fear, but rather full of anticipation. Little did we know that in less than a year, God would exceed our expectations. As families and church leaders went through the BIG Story Training and began to see the global purposes that God had for them, a spark was lit within the hearts of several participants. In one case, that spark would fan into a flame of passion and purpose that would impact many. That spark would begin with a couple, Warren* and Emily*, obediently inviting an overwhelmed young mother to a training. And that’s when the flame began to grow. Warren and Emily sat in the back corner of the very first BIG Story training. Each day, tears would fill Emily’s eyes as she listened. After the training, Emily approached the team and expressed how she and Warren pastored a church in another city, and they had a desire to help their congregation understand God’s desire to be known among the nations. She also explained her passion to help families find their role in God’s story. She said that she had not known how to do that before, but that the BIG Story Training had given her everything she needed. The spark grew brighter as Warren and Emily took their...
The Cycle Continues: Persecution in China Increases, the Church Grows

The Cycle Continues: Persecution in China Increases, the Church Grows

We were having an incredible few days of training with nearly 45 believers who were hungry to learn, despite the past year of intensified persecution permeating the Chinese church. We were feeling confident and thankful going into our final session of the Weave training, thinking we had managed to have another event without incident. As the participants were sharing what they felt the Lord was calling them to for their next steps, that’s when it happened…the unexpected knock on the door.  My heart quickened and my palms immediately began to sweat as we all awaited the reality that stood outside, waiting for us to answer. The woman at the door said she was “looking for someone,” so the pastor of the church that was hosting us stepped out into the hallway to speak with her.  While he was out of the room, the participants quickly motioned for my co-worker Melissa and me to go hide in a storage closet. They immediately began putting all materials away, taking down things we had hung on the walls, and hiding our computers and notes. A few minutes later they brought us our phones so we could delete any incriminating material. Melissa and I kept looking at each other like we couldn’t believe this was actually happening.  We would try to pray, but we could not find the words in the midst of the chaos happening inside our own hearts. In those moments I understood Romans 8:26 in a very real way, needing to rely fully on the Holy Spirit to intercede for us when we couldn’t form the words ourselves. Though we...
Raising children in the Great Commission

Raising children in the Great Commission

One family multiplies their God-sized vision It was spring in Malawi. The skies were the bluest they could be, and the trees just as green. The CMM’s children and family mobilization team, Weave, was en route to visit a family who had caught a glimpse of God’s heart for the nations, and they were blown away by their discovery. The team walked into the home of the Kachala family, where maps covered the walls. One wall displayed a world map where the parents, Reuben and Elisabeth, gathered to pray as a family for the unreached. On another wall hung a map of India, where God had led their family to serve among an unreached people group for a few years before calling them home to mobilize the Malawian church. In another room was an inflatable globe. As the teenage Kachala children, Maya and Paul, tossed this globe, the family told stories of how they had used it to play games and learn about the 10/40 Window as the kids grew up. The Kachalas attended a Weave workshop during the 2015 Global Mobilization Conference, where they learned that there was an entire community of Christians devoted to mobilizing families and children. Although this was their vision long before they encountered Weave, this pairing of identical visions started the Kachalas down the path that God had for them. It was obvious to the Weave team that the Kachalas believed God created them to make His glory known around the world. They could tell by the maps on the walls, but mostly they could see it in the family’s eyes as they...
From the classroom to the home: The Big Story Series guides families all over the world into their role in God’s mission

From the classroom to the home: The Big Story Series guides families all over the world into their role in God’s mission

“I have been doing mobilization and children’s ministry for more than two decades,” shared Nosa Tukura, Weave’s ministry partner in Nigeria. “Most available resources focus on helping children grow up and be good Christians. These resources are specifically geared toward encouraging children to be partners in fulfilling God’s mission to the least reached. They are a unique contribution to the church.” As a ministry of the CMM, Weave has been creating groundbreaking mobilization resources for families since 2014. In that time, they have exposed parents in 10 countries to the role God has for their family in completing the Great Commission through the Big Story Training. But there has never been a simple path for families to apply the training’s principles at home in practical ways. As Reuben Kachala, director of Frontier Mission International in Malawi, put it, “The Big Story Training does a good job of providing framework, passion, and ingredients in developing mission-minded families. Now families need a way to take that paradigm home.” This year Weave published the Big Story Series to meet this global need and help parents live out that new paradigm with their families. This exciting new book series guides parents through the first steps in discipling their children in God’s global purposes. Families learn about God’s heart for the nations through interactive family devotions, grow in their understanding of world religions, engage with the stories of unreached peoples, and discover how to incorporate intentional habits into everyday family life that align with God’s purposes. Comprised of three books, the Big Story Series is designed to get parents started on their journey, giving...
Entrusting children with the Great Commission

Entrusting children with the Great Commission

Some people seem to just overflow with joy. They have contagious smiles, generous spirits, and hospitable homes. Assumpta is one of those people. She can light up a room with her laughter, cook an incredible meal for a multitude of people, and make you wonder just what has given her so much passion. As our Weave team sat in Assumpta’s home in the rolling hills of Rwanda, they began to see the source of her overflowing passion. The CMM’s family mobilization team, Weave, had just finished teaching a Big Story Training in Kigali. This training, created to help families find their most strategic role in the Great Commission, was close to Assumpta’s heart. She not only administered the whole two-day event, but also went out of her way to make the CMM Weave team feel at home throughout their visit. As the team finished dinner in her home and Assumpta began to serve tea, she explained what God had done in her life to give her such passion for family mobilization. God had burdened her heart for the unreached peoples of the world, and years ago, He led her to a discipleship program in a nearby country. At the end of the discipleship program, the students were encouraged to ask God for a specific vision He might have for their ministries. Many students shared grand visions of moving to unreached people groups to share the gospel and starting businesses that would support global workers. But both Assumpta and her roommate separately felt God calling them to family mobilization. They wanted to help the church see how God could use...
Family mobilization training is launched in China despite tight security

Family mobilization training is launched in China despite tight security

Nearly 40 parents and pastors gathered together in a back room, on the top floor of a factory office building. Everyone removed SIM cards from and gave up their cell phones for the duration of the training. They were sleeping on mats on the floor throughout the building; there was no heat and the temperatures were near freezing. Only a small handful of participants ventured outside the gates of the factory compound. All of this was done in order to avoid raising suspicion and alerting the Chinese authorities to the fact that there was a large group of people meeting in this place. This was the first BIG Story Training to take place in China. Developed by Weave, a ministry of the CMM, the BIG Story Training (BST) is all about God’s plan to redeem a people from every tribe, tongue, and nation—and specifically about the role He invites families and children to play in His big story. Through this training, we want to help parents see that God has a plan for their whole family to be involved in spreading the gospel to the ends of the earth, and to give them tangible ways to do just that. In more than 10 years of doing ministry in China, I have never experienced an event with security as tight as it was for this training. It amazes me to see what local believers are willing to do and sacrifice so they can grow in understanding the Lord’s purposes. “I know that we are all nervous,” one of our hosts said before the training began. “But nothing happens without God’s...
